Holy smokes Batman.

Sony held a virtual press conference on Thursday September 9th, and I don’t think anybody was ready for what they were going to showcase.

Rather than write some thought provoking intro, I’m going to just jump into the meat and potatoes with my feedback on the most prominent titles, and I’ll link the other goodies afterwards. If you’re interested, here’s the link to full event!

Insomniac with the Marvel two piece

I love the Insomniac Spider-Man games, and Insomniac is looking to deliver with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. The trailer actually gave me goosebumps as we see Peter Parker and Miles Morales teaming up to take down some baddies, and it looks like they’re going to need each other big time. The trailer gives us a quick glimpse at Eddie Brock aka Venom and I believed its voiced over by Kraven so we might see the big bad hunter in this title also. Seeing both Miles and Peter working together makes me wonder if we’ll get co-op in this title, and makes me think…

Will Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 be better than the legendary Spider-Man 2?

We’ll find out in 2023 (pain).

Insomniac Games is working on a Wolverine game!!!

I thought this was going to be a trailer for Spider-Man and was actually pleasantly surprised when Logan’s claws came out. Now it’s only a trailer but I’m interested to see what direction they take this in. However, it’s Insomniac Games so Wolverine is in good hands.

No release date was shown.

God of War Ragnarok

Absolute goosebumps ran through my body when I heard the epic music and wind blowing at the beginning of the segment. God of War (2018) blew me away at how you could completely change a game’s formula and make it so damn good.

God of War Ragnarok looks to continue that trend with players taking control of Kratos and teenage Atreus (I read somewhere that this game takes place years after the first one) as the impending Ragnarok approaches and the conflict with a whole set of new gods approaches. Also expect to see some good freaking character development between Kratos and Atreus (this part was so good) as Atreus looks to understand who he is, and Kratos looks to defend himself and his boy.

If you have a Twitter and like the God of War series, follow Cory Barlog the creative director of Santa Monica Studios aka the studio behind God of War. He’s very open and cool on Twitter, always replying to tweets about the game with a patented “Never heard of it”. Pretty sure the final seconds of the trailer are a shout out to him!

The game is set to release in 2022.

Forspoken

Hey do you remember when this was a demo for the Unreal Engine 5? Well now it has an actual name and is a fully fledged game known as Forspoken (not Forsaken like Destiny 2).

The trailer shows off a lot of cool tidbits such as combat, the movement, and a massive open world that I wonder if it’ll allow for full exploration of said world. You control Frey Holland as she gets sucked up into a mysterious world and becomes a powerful person. I’m surprised at how good it looks, and the movement looks smooth enough with little bits in the trailer reminding me of Attack on Titan.

Forspoken is set for a Spring 2022 release window.

A remake of a legend

I’m going to be honest…

I’ve never played Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic (SWKOTR for short).

All I’ve heard is that it was a good game, and based off the reaction to the trailer, I’de be down to try it out. From what I’ve seen, this is a full remake and the team working on it is going hard to make it as good as possible.

Enter Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands

This is going to seem really weird, but I feel like this trailer had so much life in it due to the more vibrant colors and Tina’s hyper personality. I actually didn’t even think this was Borderlands trailer until I went back and rewatched the trailer. I’m thinking to myself “Wow this is a really good looking rip off of Borderlands”. Overtop the action, plenty of loot/lutes and weapons galore, the trailer looked pretty good.

As we get closer to the scheduled launch date, I’m excited to see what the classes will be and any new gameplay additions. I love the series, and even though Borderlands 3 was solid, it didn’t hold me over like Borderlands 2 did. Maybe this game can fill that void?

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is scheduled to release March 25th, 2022.

Ghosts are from Tokyo

When this game was announced back at E3 2019, I was actually intrigued by what we were shown. Fast forward two years later (jeez time flies), we actually get a bit more information in the new gameplay trailer.

While we don’t know the full setup, I can sum what I saw.

You play as a character. You wake up in half alive with powers to fight off ghosts. Some creepy guy with a demon mask in on the tv laughing at your pain. You must gain power to defeat him and save Tokyo from whatever the creepy guy unleashed. The end.

Poor summary so please don’t take it seriously! On topic, I think the game looks pretty good. I like the first person point of view as you look to fight a wide variety of ghosts, and maybe a poor take on my part, but I’d like to see this game be semi open world. You know you can go around collecting abilities, sightseeing and helping any other survivors. I don’t know, I think that’d be solid.

Ghostwire: Tokyo is set to release sometime in 2022.

Other notables

• Uncharted 4 and Uncharted: Lost Legacy are getting remastered for PS5 and PC! I’m excited PC players get the chance to play some of the games that changed my life. I have a never ending love for Uncharted.
• Alan Wake Remastered is a thing. I never played this game since I believe it only released on Xbox in 2010. The news broke a few days before the PS event, and it was pretty wholesome as I believe the original writer posted the news on a dedicated fan page (can’t find the link I’m sorry!).
• Grand Theft Auto V hits PS5 March 2022 with “improved graphics and gameplay”. It’s almost been 10 years, which is absolutely mind-blowing to think about.
• Cars go fast and look nice in the new Grand Turismo 7 trailer. The game is set to release March 4th, 2022.
• Project Eve looks to fill the void left for Bayonetta fans. We got a first trailer for the game, and it looks like a mix of Nier, Bayonetta, and Devil May Cry which is high company. Plot twist: imagine this game comes out and plays like Dark Souls.

I’m not going to lie; I expected a mild showcase with focus on indies, throw in a remaster or two, and that would’ve wrapped Sony’s event. Glad to say I wrong!

I’m excited for the future of PlayStation gaming: well, at least the future future since a few of these titles are years out. Anything interesting that I might’ve missed let me know in the comments below!
